Ragamuffin Cats - History

The history of RagaMuffin cats is not well documented and many people believe it to be an accidental breeding that resulted in great felines. Ann Baker, the founder of the breed is the key person in developing the RagaMuffin cat since she was the first who deliberately started breeding a new line.

Her activity started in the 1960s, when a Ragdoll cat named Josephine got in an accident and after a recovery gave birth to a wonderful litter. The kittens were so cute and so unlike other breeds; Ann Baker tried to preserve their qualities through the breeding of Josephine's offspring. The cats started to be called "Cherubims" and found quite a number of admirers in the neighborhood.

The line grew quickly under a close supervision of the breed's founder who chose cats for breeding and took care of the marketing issues. Ann Baker had a sole right on the breeding and the selling of these cats. No decision could be undertaken without her approval since there existed strict rules for the owners of the breed. An association was organized with Ann Baker as the leading figure.

Ragamuffin Cats - Breed Name

As time went on, breeders grew to dislike Ann Baker's practices and issued her a retirement offer. However, retirement and the loss of control over the issue seemed too painful for Ann Baker to endure. The famous breed founder refused to quit, which provided for a split in the group and compelled breeders to seek official registry recognition.

As the terms of the contract banned using a Ragdoll name, the detached group chose to name the breed "RagaMuffin," which hinted on its origin and had links to the wonderful characteristics of the breed. The group submitted a standard to the ACFA (American Cat Fancier's Association) after which the new breed was recognized. Nowadays, the AACE, CFA, CFF, and UFO also recognize RagaMuffin cats.
